JavaScript is a programming language used to add interactivity to webpages, as well as including more complex behaviours like maintaining live-feeds of information on a page. There are also tools and frameworks written for JavaScript (e.g. Node.js) which enable JavaScript to be used on servers and for other tasks outside of a web browser.
